What are Dynamics in Music?
30 Second Music Explanations

Video Transcript
Welcome to 30 second music explanations. My name is Austin. Let’s dive right in!
First off, what are dynamics? Dynamics in music are terms (from Italian) that tell us how loud or soft to play. While the actual volume level of a dynamic is subjective, it still gives us a good idea of the changes in the music that the composer wanted. These changes allow for much more expression and emotion than if the music didn’t have them.
Here are the most common dynamics in order from softest to loudest: pianississimo (ppp), pianissimo (pp), piano (p), mezzo piano (mp), mezzo forte (mf), forte (f), fortissimo (ff), and fortississimo (fff). Dynamic markings are usually placed below the music they apply to, and they last essentially until you reach another dynamic marking.
We made it! If you have more questions about dynamics, please check out my other videos that talk about each dynamic individually. Also, please comment and let me know what music marking you want to learn about next.
Until next time!
